Elk River Farm has a unique feature not found elsewhere in the Northwoods. The owners transformed a 19th century barn foundation to create a ‘Karesansui,’ or Japanese ‘dry landscape garden.’ The garden holds a carefully composed arrangement of indigenous rocks, water features, moss, and pruned trees and shrubs. Small stones are raked into designs that represent ripples in water. The stone landscape is to be observed from a vantage point outside the garden. It is intended to reflect the intimate essence of nature, and to aid relaxation and the contemplation of life. The owners are students of Sukiya lifestyles and are delighted to share this special feature of the Farm with interested guests. Ask to see the teahouse “Kuma Kissa.”
Ruffed Grouse Lodge and Elk River Farm are connected though forested walking trails. Both locations have fire pits with free firewood and picnic areas, which are perfect for family gatherings. Alumacraft fishing boats, canoes and kayaks are included at both the Lodge and Elk River Farm. A pontoon boat, a Yamaha 8hp outboard motor, and a MinnKota trolling motor are available for daily or weekly rental. For guests bringing their own boats, there is a public landing serving Wilson Lake one mile from the Lodge. There is also a private boat launch for access to the Elk River.
The Cottage is the perfect retreat for two persons. ERF is a no-smoking facility. Sorry, we don't take children or pets at the Cottage.
